How to plan for the backyard update you’ve always wanted
It seems to be the go-to meeting place for any occasion. So, is your backyard up to scratch?
Coming out of the cooler months, your backyard might need a little (or a lot) of love. If you’re wanting to change things up, here are our 4 tips to plan for that backyard update while sticking to a budget.
Plan ahead of time
Maybe it’s not a great idea to think “I want to change everything in my backyard, let’s head over to Bunnings and buy some stuff.” Although we agree that Bunnings is its own form of paradise, it’s always a great idea to start with a plan.
If you’re redesigning your backyard, you’ll need to know the cost, what you’ll need, where things will go and how you’re going to do it.
Find out how much space you really have to work with by doing a thorough clear out - getting rid of (or selling) anything you no longer want. Keep an open mind for some of the things you already have and whether there is a way to repurpose the item to save on costs. This newfound space can give you a clearer idea of what you can achieve.
Also, look around for some inspiration and get some ideas together. The more photos you have to show around, the clearer you can be about what you’re hoping to achieve.
Lastly, you’ll want to plan around what you want to achieve out of your backyard. Is it to be able to invite family and friends over for a drink and meal? Will you need to prioritise seating?
Set up a budget
Obviously, if you want to stick to a budget, it’s time to create it. Decide how much money you want to put aside for this project to help keep you on track.
With all of the inspiration you’ve pulled together, make a list of what you want for your backyard, making sure that you’ve measured that each is a doable task in your space.
Then create a list of the plants, furniture, structures you want and research prices. The more you’re willing to research, the more you could potentially save.
Landscape your backyard
Hiring a professional landscaper can potentially send the cost of your makeover over budget. With resources such as the internet and flower shops, ask for expert advice for the kinds of plants that are suitable for your backyard.
Take note of the sunlight, placement and climate and ask what would suit. Going for plants that are hardy, such as many succulents, can help give you the look you’re wanting, year-round.
Decorate your backyard
Start with anything that you’ve kept aside to recycle and refresh those items first. Look at some DIY projects that could help give it an appearance boost.
If you had a sun table on your list of new items but already own one - could you create a mosaic on top of the table, spray it blue or just purchase some new cushions for the chairs? Also, don’t dismiss op shops and recycled goods, as they could save you a good penny too.
Take some time to see if you’ve achieved what you set out to do and adjust your decorating to ensure you’re redesigning to the purpose of your makeover.
