Australian property firms top global sustainability rankings

Summary to link

Australian property companies are leading global sustainability efforts, according to the 2024 GRESB benchmark results, as announced by the Property Council of Australia. The Oceania region, including Australia and New Zealand, ranked first in both the standing investments and development benchmarks, highlighting the region's strong commitment to sustainable property practices.

Mike Zorbas, CEO of the Property Council of Australia, emphasized that Australian property leaders continue to set a global standard for sustainable buildings and portfolios. He noted that the built environment accounts for a quarter of Australia's emissions, and the achievements in sustainable property development contribute significantly to the nation's net-zero targets.

In 2024, the GRESB benchmark saw record participation with 2,223 real estate entities assessed globally, including 132 from Australia. GRESB, founded in 2009, is the world’s largest source of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) data for real estate, serving as a global standard for sustainability in the property sector.
