About Moonee Ponds

Moonee Ponds is located in Melbourne’s inner north-west, is a vibrant and established suburb known for its blend of history, green spaces, well regarded schools, sporting and arts events, shopping precinct with a wide range of restaurants and bars. It’s less than 7 kilometres from Melbourne’s CBD, making it popular for those seeking a balance between city proximity and a quieter residential feel.

Moonee Ponds (N) is bounded by Park Street, Grandison Street, Mount Alexander Road, Heritage Street, Lethbridge Street and Buckley Street in the north, Moonee Ponds Creek in the east, Ormond Road and Maribyrnong Road in the south, and Orford Street and Waverley Street in the west.

Once a semi-rural area, Moonee Ponds quickly transformed into a bustling district following the gold discoveries in Castlemaine and Bendigo during the 1850s. By the 1880s, the suburb was well-connected, with a railway line linking Melbourne to Essendon, surrounded by numerous farms, businesses, hotels, and even a police station.

In 1880, Puckle Street, at the heart of Moonee Ponds, welcomed the Essendon and Flemington Institute, whose intricate architecture attracted more businesses to the area. However, it wasn’t until the 1920s and 1930s that Puckle Street Shopping Centre drew even larger crowds.

Today, the population of Moonee Ponds stands at approximately 16,224—50% higher than it was a century ago.
